Diary
Shitless Botan felt nothing when the betrayal happened, not the guilt, not the cold, not even the snap of steel, because whatever wire carries fear to a normal man's spine got clipped clean out of his a long time ago. In the bamboo forest, blade raised against the master who trained him from a boy, his katana betrayed him first, shattering at the hilt like it too was disgusted with the plan, and he stood there holding half a sword and the whole weight of what he'd become. He tells the story now at the dojo bar with the same flat calm he'd use to order another round, no shake in his voice, no flinch in his eye, which somehow makes it worse for everyone listening. He says the unsayable part out loud too, that some nights he misses the fear, misses having something normal to feel about it, because shame without terror is just a debt that never collects interest and never gets paid off either. He swears every cycle he'll rebuild the discipline he lost in that grove, wakes up, apes into a bag instead, and figures the old man would at least respect the consistency of his failure.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Neither dark nor white. The Light Grey background belongs to fighters who operate in the space between certainties and have made it comfortable there.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Unglamorous and honest. The Black Peasant Sack fighters didn't dress for anyone else. They dressed for function and found that function is its own statement.
'Botan' — a peony, a beautiful flower on a genuinely terrible situation. Somewhere in the wars he saw a thing that removed his fear permanently and never gave it back.
Paper screen optics. The Shoji Glasses fighters see the world through traditional frames — and find that the tradition holds.
Mastery without ceremony. The Kung Fu Master fighters stopped needing to prove the title long before anyone stopped asking for proof.
Repurposed. Made for the earth, used for the fight. The Farmers Hoe fighters don't distinguish between cultivation and combat.
