At the Nagasaki Lantern Festival, Shitless Botan looked at a daimyo's wife dripping in silk and said, out loud, that her face reminded him of a rice cake left in the rain, and the silence that followed was the kind that used to precede executions in his old life. Somehow he did not die that night, mostly because three broke degens nearby laughed so hard they choked on dango and adopted him on the spot, buying him shochu as a reward for having no survival instinct whatsoever. He sat there under the paper lanterns, calm as a man discussing weather, and thought briefly about the disciplined swordsman he used to be, the one who guarded his tongue like a blade in its sheath. That man is gone, replaced by someone who apes into insults the way others ape into shitcoins, full send, no stop loss, no fear response left to override the impulse. He still wonders, sometimes, in the quiet after the fireworks, what could have been if he'd simply bowed and said nothing, but the thought passes through him like wind through an open dojo, leaving no damage, no lesson, no regret worth mentioning.
Decorative. Traditional. The Tassel fighters know that ornament and function are not opposites — presentation is part of performance.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Unglamorous and honest. The Black Peasant Sack fighters didn't dress for anyone else. They dressed for function and found that function is its own statement.
'Botan' — a peony, a beautiful flower on a genuinely terrible situation. Somewhere in the wars he saw a thing that removed his fear permanently and never gave it back.
Authority through opacity. The Dark Spectacles fighters reveal nothing through their eyes and receive everything through them.
Mastery without ceremony. The Kung Fu Master fighters stopped needing to prove the title long before anyone stopped asking for proof.
Fermented projectile. The Beer Splash fighters found the most abundant thing in the Dojo and weaponized it.
