Out where the wind cuts like an unpaid debt, Shitless Botan stood arguing with three ronin about honor while a spotted pig watched him with the patient eyes of something that already knew how this ends, and Botan, fear surgically removed at the root, looked past the drawn blades and fell hopelessly, irreversibly in love. He told the samurai, calm as a man reading a grocery list, that their bushido had rugged itself the day they started charging interest on it, then turned his back on steel to scratch the pig behind the ears like a man greeting his one true floor. The old discipline in him, the part that once meant something, tried to rise and say this is madness, and Botan simply let it lose, the way he lets most fights against himself end in a draw nobody scores. Weeks later he is recovering slowly, wrapped in bandages that smell faintly of weed and regret, feeding the pig by hand and telling anyone who visits that dying for love was never on the table, only bleeding for it a little. He says the unsayable to the nurses too: that he'd ape into that same cold field again tomorrow, pig and blades and all, because a heart with no fear left in it has nothing better to spend itself on.
