Botan once faced down spears without a flicker of pulse, the kind of samurai calm that made lesser men soil their hakama, but nothing in his training prepared him for the ambush that came in his own futon, in his own house, over a beetle fight he'd rigged for himself and himself alone. The degens found him mid-wager, cheering on a stag beetle named Big Kenji against a rival beetle with no name at all, bedsheets kicked into a makeshift dohyo, sake cups doubling as tiny arenas. He did not flinch when they surrounded him, did not blink when they filmed it, because fear had been carved out of him on some forgotten battlefield years ago and never grew back. What grew instead was shame, a slow deep rot he cannot cut down with any blade, the ache of a disciplined blade-master reduced to shouting odds at insects under his own blanket. He has tried, since, to reclaim some scrap of bushido dignity, swearing off bedroom beetle degeneracy for good, and by the next full moon Big Kenji was back on the sheets, undefeated, and so was the shame, sitting patiently beside him like an old unkillable friend.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Left the order. Didn't stop fighting. The Dejen Apostate fighters broke from whatever school trained them and found that the training stayed anyway.
'Botan' — a peony, a beautiful flower on a genuinely terrible situation. Somewhere in the wars he saw a thing that removed his fear permanently and never gave it back.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Broad shade, broad vision. The Wide Kasa Fisherman fighters cover more ground with their hat than most cover with their plans.
