They say fear lives in the gut, but Botan had his surgically removed somewhere between the last war and his third bad bet, so when he bunked down in Tokuda's family home for the night, he slept like a man with nothing left to lose, which was, technically, accurate. Somewhere past midnight the house exhaled its old ghosts, floorboards groaning ancestral warnings, and Tokuda's grandmother's spirit or maybe just Tokuda's snoring tested Botan's will the way monks test steel, and Botan just rolled over and asked it, out loud, if it wanted to split a blunt. He used to meditate for discipline, sword drills at dawn, rice and silence, now his morning ritual is a lukewarm energy drink and checking if his bags rugged overnight, and he has made peace with being terrible at both. By sunrise nothing in that house scared him, not the noises, not the debt, not the void where his samurai discipline used to live, and Botan walked out grinning, truly free, because a man who fears nothing has nothing left to protect, and that, somehow, is the closest thing to enlightenment he's found on this side of the dojo.
Decorative. Traditional. The Tassel fighters know that ornament and function are not opposites — presentation is part of performance.
Bright but not loud. The Teal Daytime fighters are the ones you underestimate because they don't announce their arrival.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
The Dojo itself, worn. Whoever puts on the Degen Dojo Kimono becomes part of the institution — and the institution becomes part of them.
'Botan' — a peony, a beautiful flower on a genuinely terrible situation. Somewhere in the wars he saw a thing that removed his fear permanently and never gave it back.
