Diary
Shitless Botan once swore an oath to a dojo that no longer exists, and somewhere between the last real battle and the first bad decision, the fear that keeps other men alive got surgically removed and never grew back. So when he caught something unspeakable rolling around on the tatami mats mid-brawl, he didn't flinch, didn't scream, just checked the damage like a man reading a floor price after a rug. His sensei used to say discipline is forged in stillness, and Botan sat there stone-faced, mid-diagnosis, proving the old man half right for once. He lit a joint with the same hand that signed the clinic forms, exhaled, and muttered that he's tested worse mats and still walked away undefeated, he can do better, he always says he can do better, he never quite does.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Kept from the harvest. The Dried Straw fighters dress in what's left after everything useful has been taken — and have discovered this is plenty.
'Botan' — a peony, a beautiful flower on a genuinely terrible situation. Somewhere in the wars he saw a thing that removed his fear permanently and never gave it back.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Focus made visible. The Karate Headband fighters bound their intention around their skull so it couldn't escape during the fight.
The weighted hook-blade on a rope. Distance and cutting in one weapon. The Heavy Kyoketsu fighters control range — nothing happens at a distance they didn't set.
