Diary
Botan once swore an oath of iron discipline, katana sheathed, mind still as a temple pond, and he kept that oath right up until the day a pack of courtesans descended on him at the shoreline like gulls on a dropped onigiri. They picked his purse clean between giggles and promises, and every koban that vanished felt less like theft and more like a toll paid to the gods of chaos, a toll he paid gladly. Fear had been carved out of him somewhere on a battlefield long forgotten, so where another man would have flinched or fled, Botan only laughed, watching his life savings walk away in silk sleeves, calling it the finest robbery he'd ever survived. He tells the story now at the tavern with the same flat calm he'd use to report a light drizzle, insisting he is saving up again, budgeting, disciplined, truly this time, while somehow ordering another round he cannot afford. The old samurai in him weeps quietly somewhere in the back of his skull, but the degen up front just grins, empty-pocketed and thoroughly, gallows-calmly thrilled.”
Heavier than gold. Less prestigious. More honest. The Iron Earring fighters chose function over signal and consider that to be the signal.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
The name is the lore. The Poop Pride Kimono fighters have transcended embarrassment so completely that they wear the proof. Undefeated.
'Botan' — a peony, a beautiful flower on a genuinely terrible situation. Somewhere in the wars he saw a thing that removed his fear permanently and never gave it back.
Still functional. Functionally broken. The Broken Glasses fighters see a cracked version of reality and have found it more honest than the uncracked one.
The farmer's crown. The Rice Hat fighters carry tradition on their head without ceremony — it's just what you wear when you have work to do.
Found. Not forged. The Large Branch fighters don't wait for the right weapon — they use what's available and are surprised when this needs explanation.
