Shitless Botan once stood sentinel in silence for eleven hours without blinking, a blade of discipline sheathed in a body that no longer flinched at anything, not blades, not death, not consequence. Now he sits cross-legged beneath a grove of half-dead pines, a bucket of chicken between his knees, grease painting his knuckles like war paint from a war nobody remembers fighting. He behaved badly out there, ate like the last samurai at the last feast before the last extinction, growled at squirrels, threatened a crow for eye contact, and left bones scattered like the wreckage of a rugged position no one asked him to hold. His family still doesn't know, and he isn't scared to tell them, he simply hasn't decided it's worth the honor of confession, gallows-calm as ever, weighing shame like it's just another floor price that hasn't bottomed yet. He tells himself tomorrow he'll meditate, fast, rebuild the iron will of old, but tomorrow smells like chicken too, and Botan, fearless in all things except follow-through, already knows discipline lost this particular duel before it began.
Sober, unlike the drunk variant. The Lizard fighters have a companion with excellent judgment who never asks for anything and always seems to know when to leave.
The hour when most give up. The Blue Evening fighters are still at their desk, still watching the chart, still holding.
Every cracked card. White is the beginner's belt, and torn is how the crack left it, border and all: a White card is never printed. A repair earns Blue.
'Botan' — a peony, a beautiful flower on a genuinely terrible situation. Somewhere in the wars he saw a thing that removed his fear permanently and never gave it back.
Wealth made garment. The Money Kimono fighters wear their wins literally — the fabric is a record, not a boast.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Wild, electrified. The Mohikan fighters' hair moves independently and the fighter has accepted that this is appropriate.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,468 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Fermented projectile. The Beer Splash fighters found the most abundant thing in the Dojo and weaponized it.
