Botan sat at the crooked shrine along Degens Path, the one where three dead samurai supposedly left their fear before the underworld took the rest of them, and he realized he'd left his there too, years ago, without noticing. He tried once, dutifully, to feel dread again, staring down a rigged dice game in Kyoto that had rugged four men before him, and instead he just yawned and doubled the bet. Discipline told him to walk away from the table; the part of him with no fear surgically installed just ordered another round and asked the dealer if he took NFTs as collateral. He is happier this way, calm as a man reading his own eulogy aloud for fun, and he'll tell you plainly, unblinking, that losing everything never felt like losing at all. Somewhere his old sensei is rolling in his grave, and Botan, if he heard about it, would probably just say
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Neither dark nor white. The Light Grey background belongs to fighters who operate in the space between certainties and have made it comfortable there.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
'Botan' — a peony, a beautiful flower on a genuinely terrible situation. Somewhere in the wars he saw a thing that removed his fear permanently and never gave it back.
