Diary
Once he held a blade so still that generals wept, but Shitless Botan traded the steel calm of the dojo for the greasy calm of the yakiniku grill, and somewhere between the tongue skewers and the third round of shochu he found a different kind of discipline entirely, one the neighborhood has not forgiven and the smoke alarm still remembers. He did not flinch when they threw him out, did not blush when the obaachan called the police, because fear was surgically removed from him long before shame ever had a chance to move in. Now he sits seiza-straight at the edge of his futon each morning, vows carved into his forearm like sutras, swearing on his ancestors' ashes that today will be the day he becomes a better man, a monk of restraint, a pillar of the community again. By noon he is back at the counter ordering the fattiest cut, eyes glazed with something between reverence and ruin, whispering that this, too, is a form of meditation. The samurai in him bows every night in grief; the degen in him orders seconds.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
The hour when most give up. The Blue Evening fighters are still at their desk, still watching the chart, still holding.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Grew things before they fought things. The Farmer clothing is the clearest record of what a fighter was before the Dojo changed them.
'Botan' — a peony, a beautiful flower on a genuinely terrible situation. Somewhere in the wars he saw a thing that removed his fear permanently and never gave it back.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Floor-mat helmet. The Tatami Kabuto fighters made armor from the training floor itself — they carry the place they trained in wherever they go.
Chain-sickle, aged. The Rusty Kusarigama fighters have been in more fights than maintenance sessions.
