Diary
Botan had no fear left in him, they'd scraped it out years ago along with whatever sense he once carried into battle, so when he aped his entire treasury onto a single hand across the tatami mats he did it with the flat, sunny calm of a man ordering tea. The floor of his fortune vanished in the time it takes a blade to fall, and instead of screaming he just nodded, like the universe had confirmed something he'd suspected all along. Now he sits cross-legged sharpening an old tanto, announcing to anyone nearby that seppuku is on the agenda for Tuesday, pending weather and snacks, because a ronin ought to keep some ceremony even in ruin. He tries, gallows-calm, to summon the old discipline that once let him sit still for hours in meditation, but his hand keeps drifting toward the sake instead of the blade, and he laughs at himself for it, unbothered, unsurprised. Some samurai die by their own sword; Botan seems more likely to be rugged by his own bar tab before he ever gets the ritual right.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Not a garment — a record. The Battle Scars clothing is what's left after everything else was stripped away. These fighters wear their history.
'Botan' — a peony, a beautiful flower on a genuinely terrible situation. Somewhere in the wars he saw a thing that removed his fear permanently and never gave it back.
Carried more than worn. The Pocket Glasses fighters have perfect vision when they choose to apply it — the rest of the time, they let instinct run.
Crow spirit, long nose, ancient power. The Tengu Mask fighters are wearing something that predates the Dojo — something older that chose to be here.
Heavy, ceramic, purpose-built for one thing and used for another. The Giant Sake Bottle fighters are creative about their arsenal.
