It was in the steaming waters of the onsen, deep into a fistful of mushrooms, that Botan watched his own fear dissolve like foam off the surface, and he has never once gone looking for it since. Some men chase enlightenment for forty years and find nothing; Botan found his in a single afternoon and spends every day thereafter reliving that exact moment, narrating the unsayable to anyone within earshot with the calm of a man who has already seen his own death and found it boring. He tells himself he trains to reclaim the samurai steadiness of his youth, then loses that fight the instant the water gets warm and the visions return. Once he cut down men without blinking; now he stares down a bad hand at the tables and simply does not flinch, because flinching left him along with the fear. What remains is a fighter who cannot be rattled, cannot be surprised, and cannot, for the life of him, remember why discipline mattered in the first place.
