Before he ever raised a blade against him, Rin had already died six imagined deaths at Azuma's hands, each one rehearsed in the sleepless dark with the precision of a man who alphabetizes his own doom. So when the real spar in the garden lasted four clean exchanges and ended with Azuma's bokken resting gentle against his collarbone, something in Rin's chest simply gave out, not from defeat but from the sheer astonishment of surviving something he'd already survived a hundred times in his head. He calls it enlightenment now, though what actually happened is that his nervous system filed a formal resignation and he has been trying, badly, to live one day at a time ever since. Some mornings he manages it for whole minutes before he's back to counting exits in a room with one door, or triple-checking that his stash is still exactly where he buried it under the floorboards, as if the floor itself might rug him. He tells anyone who'll listen that the old discipline is dead and buried with his samurai days, but you can still catch him meditating at 4 a.m. with a joint in one hand and a checklist in the other, forever bracing for a war that already ended.
