Rin had drilled seventeen contingency plans for the duel with Botan in the rice paddies, everything from a sudden hailstorm to Botan secretly being three raccoons in a cloak, and none of them accounted for how easy the actual knockout would be, one clean strike and the man face-planted into the mud like a sack of rice. Victory should have felt like relief, but Rin's nervous system, trained for years of imaginary ambushes, had nowhere left to point itself, so he did what any reasonable ex-samurai does after defeating his anxiety incarnate: he got aggressively, catastrophically drunk in celebration and then in despair, sometimes within the same cup. Somewhere around bottle four he started weeping about the good old days mucking out the stable, because shoveling poop had rules, had a start and an end, and no poop had ever once tried to gut him with a wakizashi. Now he lies in the wet paddy grass whispering worst-case scenarios to the rice stalks, still clutching his sake like a security blanket, trying and failing to build a schedule sober enough to survive tomorrow's hangover, discipline rugged clean off the floor of his own life yet again.
