Stresshead Rin had drawn up seventeen contingency plans for the family's New Year gathering, none of which accounted for his uncle handing him a fan and a wig and shoving him onstage to play the family's ancestral heroine in the annual house drama. He froze mid-bow, sweat prickling under painted eyebrows, certain that some watching kami of bushido was tallying this moment against his soul's ledger. He got through the scene, technically, voice cracking on the tragic monologue, but in his head the performance replayed on a loop of shame reel for weeks after, each viewing worse than the last. Now he keeps a laminated checklist titled HONOR RECOVERY PROTOCOL taped inside his sake cabinet, item one always the same unchecked box: forgive yourself, Rin, it was one line about cherry blossoms. He never checks it, because some vigilance, he's decided, is meant to guard nothing at all except the wound that keeps it company.
