Tokuda once carried himself like a blade unsheathed only for war, disciplined, silent, deadly, and now he roars at pigeons in the shadow of Mount Fuji like they owe him yen. The story goes that he lost his entire stack after a night with a woman who, gods have mercy on his tiny degenerate heart, was also named Tokuda, as if fate itself wanted the joke to land twice. He howls it to anyone who will listen, "I GOT RUGGED BY MY OWN NAME AT THE FOOT OF THE SACRED MOUNTAIN," fist raised, sake sloshing, dignity nowhere in sight. Every morning he vows to meditate at sunrise like the old masters, to reclaim the stillness he traded for chaos, and every morning he sleeps through it nursing a hangover and a grudge against himself. He has not forgiven himself, not one bit, but by the ancestors he will scream about it until the mountain itself agrees to forget.
