Diary
Young Yuji came into this world grinning, the kind of cheerful kid who never should have held a blade, but the war ended before he got his real fight and something in him has been starving ever since. Last Tuesday that hunger found him at the local yakiniku, elbow deep in tongs and rage, swinging on three off-duty salarymen over a dispute nobody can fully explain, least of all Yuji, who was laughing the whole time like it was the greatest night of his short life. He tells everyone at the dojo the next morning that this is the wake-up call, that he is done chasing phantom glory in smoke-filled grill houses, that starting today it is cold showers, sunrise drills, and zero weed until his form is clean again. By noon he has aped his allowance into a floor-price meme coin some stranger pitched him between bites of galbi, convinced this is discipline too, just the financial kind, and by dusk he is back at the same yakiniku toasting its recovery with a beer he swore he would not drink. Sleepless again, grinning again, Yuji tells himself tomorrow is the real tomorrow, the one where the kid finally catches the war he was born three years too late to keep.
Worn as trophy or warning — nobody is quite sure which. The Chicken Bones fighters have a ceremony for everything and share it with no one.
Royalty that refused the crown. The Purple Night backgrounds belong to fighters who could have been somewhere easier and chose not to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Memento mori made fashionable. The Skull Kimono fighters remember what's at stake and wear the reminder so they never forget.
Still becoming, and always will be — the wars ended before he got to finish. All promise and no scars, certain his great chapter was over the next hill. The hill turned out to be the last one.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Ancient discipline, modern retention. The Braided Samurai Ponytail fighters maintain something traditional precisely because the world keeps trying to make them let it go.
The poisonous pufferfish as a weapon. The Frightened Fugu fighters chose something lethal that looks absurd — and find that this is the most accurate description of themselves.
