Young Yuji never got his war, so he built one out of back alleys and bad decisions, always looking for the flash of danger that might finally make him feel like the samurai he was born too late to become. That night it was Fred's snake, some scaled degenerate familiar coiled around a bucket-hatted stoner's shoulders, and Yuji, sleepless as always on some cocktail of energy drinks and unresolved bushido, decided the smart move was to get closer. The bite came fast, sinking into his scalp of all places, and by the time he pried the thing off, clumps of his hair were scattered across the pavement like cherry blossoms at the world's saddest hanami. He should have screamed. Instead he grinned, chest heaving, heart doing something he hadn't felt since before the wars ended, and he chased that same reckless high through every gutter and gambling den since, discipline forever one snakebite behind him.
Worn deliberately. The Nails fighters made choices with their appearance that most would call unconventional and they would call honest.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
The standard-bearer. The Proud Dejen Kimono fighters represent the collection consciously — they know what they're part of and they dress accordingly.
