Young Yuji never got his real war, so he built a smaller one under the Nihonbashi bridge at 3am, half a joint deep, hollering insults at a daimyo's wife who did not ask to be part of his legend. He'd been employed that morning, technically, some overnight security gig his mother begged him to take, and by the time the woman's palanquin guards were done with him he was employed no longer, floor price zero, rugged by his own mouth. He told himself it didn't matter, that discipline was for men whose glory hadn't already packed up and left town without them, but his hands still shook the way they used to before drills that no longer exist. Now he sleeps in stretches of forty minutes, calls himself truly free, and practices his old katas alone on the riverbank at dawn, sloppy, half remembered, chasing a ghost of a war that ended before he was old enough to bleed in it. Freedom, it turns out, just means nobody's left to tell him to stop.“
