Diary
Young Yuji was born a beat too late for the last real war, so he went looking for one in the grey mists where the degenerates gambled away what little honor the wars had left standing. He argued, the way he argues about everything, too loud and too sure, chasing some ghost-glory that had already packed up and left before he ever showed up to the battlefield. The degenerates did not care for his mouth or his manners, and by dawn he was short a pair of things a samurai is generally expected to keep. He tells himself it sharpened his focus, that a man fights cleaner with nothing left to protect, though anyone watching him pace the dojo floor at 3 a.m., eyes red, muttering about discipline he still hasn't found, knows better. Some nights he even tries to meditate on it, sits cross-legged and still for almost four whole minutes before the restlessness wins again, same as it always does.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Lord's garment worn into battle. The Daimyo Warrior Kimono fighters have authority they didn't ask for and intention they haven't announced.
Still becoming, and always will be — the wars ended before he got to finish. All promise and no scars, certain his great chapter was over the next hill. The hill turned out to be the last one.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Elevated tradition. The High Straw Rice Hat fighters dress high above their own heads — everything they do is reaching upward.
Not defensive. Offensive. The Floral Parasol fighters weaponized elegance — opponents hesitate before striking something that looks like it shouldn't be there.
