Diary
Young Yuji never got a real war, just the tail end of one, so he went looking for glory the only way a sleepless teenager with a grudge knows how: sabotage. He waited under the bridge at midnight, plotting to undercut his own master's name like he was shorting a token he swore was rugged from the start, heart hammering with the kind of adrenaline that used to belong to real battles. Instead some nameless degen with faster hands lifted his coin purse clean while Yuji was busy whispering treachery into the dark, and he stood there broke, betrayed by his own ambition before he could even betray anyone else. The Dojo elders didn't care that the plan failed, only that it existed, and they tossed him out into the night still twitchy, still wired, still convinced the next scheme would be the one that finally aped him into legend. He tells himself discipline is next on the list, right after he gets his money back, right after he sleeps, right after one more shot at the glory that left before he ever got to hold it.
Without the gold. The Jesuit Crosses fighters have the same conviction but carry it lighter — the weight is in the belief, not the metal.
Royalty that refused the crown. The Purple Night backgrounds belong to fighters who could have been somewhere easier and chose not to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Blade pattern. The Katana Kimono fighters understand that what you wear signals what you expect — and they expect a fight.
Still becoming, and always will be — the wars ended before he got to finish. All promise and no scars, certain his great chapter was over the next hill. The hill turned out to be the last one.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Mastery without ceremony. The Kung Fu Master fighters stopped needing to prove the title long before anyone stopped asking for proof.
Implies infirmity, delivers otherwise. The Wooden Walking Cane fighters move slower than expected and hit harder than prepared for.
