Young Yuji was born a beat too late for the last real war, and he's been trying to catch up to it ever since, sprinting through nights that never let him sleep, hunting a glory that packed its bags and left before he even swung his first practice blade. So when he and Goro hit the street stalls at 3 a.m., faces lit by grease-fire and neon, Yuji wasn't just eating noodles, he was chasing the ghost of some battlefield feast he never got invited to, elbows flying like he was already famous. He tripped over nothing, over everything, over the weight of a legacy he inherited but never earned, and the crack of his elbow against the pavement echoed louder than any war drum he'd missed. Goro just laughed, mouth full, while Yuji lay there grinning through the pain, because for one shining, stupid second he finally felt like he was part of a story worth telling. He calls it destiny now, cradling the arm in a sling made of instant-ramen napkins, swearing between winces that he'll train harder tomorrow, rise at dawn, find discipline again, right after this next bowl, right after this next war that isn't coming.
