Young Yuji was supposed to be meditating behind the shoji doors, spine straight, mind empty, chasing the stillness the old masters promised would make a man legendary before the war stole legendary and left only leftovers. Instead his thoughts wandered somewhere soft and unholy, and by the time he noticed the incense had burned to nothing he'd already gone and become, by his own decree, a tainted man, disgraced by nothing but his own restless heart. He hasn't slept in seven nights since, eyes red as a losing candle, pacing the dojo floor like a ronin looking for a war that already ended without him. Every dawn he swears tonight's the night he rebuilds the discipline, sits properly, breathes right, stops chasing ghosts of glory and women both, and every dawn he's still awake, jittery, aped into his own restless legend. Somewhere in the wreckage of his focus he's still just a kid the peace came too early for, swinging at a fight that packed up and left before he ever got his turn.
Worn deliberately. The Nails fighters made choices with their appearance that most would call unconventional and they would call honest.
