Diary
Young Yuji climbed Mount Fuji the way he did everything, too fast, too loud, three years too late for the war that would've made him a legend instead of a kid with a chip on his shoulder and nowhere to swing it. He told himself the summit would feel like the glory he missed, so he packed a joint the size of a wakizashi and started developing bad habits somewhere around the second rest station, sandals kicked off for what he swore was five minutes of grounding himself to the mountain's energy. Six hours, two naps, and one very confused shrine attendant later, the sandals were gone, the weed was gone, and Yuji was sitting barefoot in the dirt trying to remember why he'd aped into this whole enlightenment idea in the first place. He'd promised himself discipline, sunrise meditation, the works, like the old masters, but he slept through the sunrise and meditated mostly on how cold his feet were. Uninspiring, he called it later, staring at the peak that never once looked back at him, already restless for whatever reckless thing came next.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
War color, formal cut. The Red Warrior Kimono fighters dressed for the battle they expected and arrived at the one they got.
Still becoming, and always will be — the wars ended before he got to finish. All promise and no scars, certain his great chapter was over the next hill. The hill turned out to be the last one.
Carried more than worn. The Pocket Glasses fighters have perfect vision when they choose to apply it — the rest of the time, they let instinct run.
Practical and armed. The Hair Bun With Chopsticks fighters put utensils in their hair and call it hair care — the dual function is not accidental.
A live chicken. As a weapon. The Chicken fighters have committed to an approach that nobody expected and found that unexpectedness is half the battle.
