Diary
They named him Akuma back when the war still needed monsters, and he wore it the way other men wear a good coat, comfortable, a little too warm, impossible to take off. In the dojo garden he finally came for the master himself, blade low, reputation dragging behind him like smoke off a burning temple, and what got tested wasn't steel but will, the master's stillness cracking him open like a rigged floor collapsing under a bag holder. He knelt there after, demon-faced and humbled, and swore himself to Buddha on the spot, because even monsters get scared straight sometimes. These days he lights incense with the same hands that used to light joints, sits for meditation and somehow still ends up three hours deep into a poker game he swore he'd skip, laughing low and menacing at his own broken vows like they're the punchline to a joke only he finds funny. He's devoted, technically, the way a degen is devoted to touching grass eventually, and everyone at the dojo agrees that's the most terrifying kind of enlightenment there is.
Heavier than gold. Less prestigious. More honest. The Iron Earring fighters chose function over signal and consider that to be the signal.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
The red Oni rages where the blue Oni waits. The Red Oni Tattoo fighters run hot and they are at peace with this.
'Akuma' means devil, a name he didn't choose. The survivors needed a word bigger than soldier for what he did on the field, and it stuck.
Authority through opacity. The Dark Spectacles fighters reveal nothing through their eyes and receive everything through them.
The warrior and the wanderer. Worn by those who are between destinations but never between fights.
Organization-issue. The Yakuza Club fighters have backup in the weight of the weapon itself — it carries institutional authority.
