They called him Akuma back when it meant something, back when the name made men set down their swords in Kyoto's shadow and reconsider the shape of their lives. Now it just means the guy who got jumped by a flock of pigeons outside the whorehouse in Yoshiwara, robes shredded, dignity aped by feathers and beaks while the working girls laughed themselves sick from the balcony. He tells himself the birds sensed the demon in him and attacked out of respect, but he knows the truth: he was three sake bowls deep and reaching for someone else's coin purse. Integrity, discipline, the old warrior's code, all of it flew off with those pigeons and never came back, and every morning he vows to rebuild himself into something fearsome again, then gets rugged by his own hangover before noon. Still, he grins that same demon grin, because a man who's already lost everything and found his dreams waiting on the other side has nothing left to fear, not birds, not shame, not even himself.
Not contacts. Not paint. Something older. The Shaman Eyes fighters see through the collection at a frequency others can't access, and they've been doing it since before the derug.
Unclear until it clears. The Grey Mist backgrounds belong to fighters who operate where others can't see, and use that fog as their advantage.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
The organization runs deep. The Yakuza Tattoo Sleeve fighters have commitments that predated the Dojo and will outlast it.
'Akuma' means devil, a name he didn't choose. The survivors needed a word bigger than soldier for what he did on the field, and it stuck.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Focus made visible. The Karate Headband fighters bound their intention around their skull so it couldn't escape during the fight.
A live chicken. As a weapon. The Chicken fighters have committed to an approach that nobody expected and found that unexpectedness is half the battle.
