They called him Akuma once because men who faced him in the war did not walk away whole, and he wore that name now the way a retired blade wears rust, with a grin that says the edge is still in there somewhere. In Okonawa he knelt over a beetle arena the size of a sake cup, put a month's floor-price winnings on a stag beetle named Ronin, and snapped his own finger clean betting the table instead of his hand when the thing lost in four seconds flat. He has not slept since, not from pain, but because insomnia feels like the last discipline he has left, a monk's vigil repurposed into staring at the ceiling reliving his own bad odds. Every night he tells himself tomorrow he trains at dawn like the old dojo demanded, and every dawn finds him instead nursing the finger, the losses, and a joint that has gone out twice from neglect. He finds it darkly funny, in the way only a demon can, that the man they feared across a battlefield now fears nothing except how much worse the next bug fight might make him.
Not contacts. Not paint. Something older. The Shaman Eyes fighters see through the collection at a frequency others can't access, and they've been doing it since before the derug.
The hour when most give up. The Blue Evening fighters are still at their desk, still watching the chart, still holding.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Self-described. The Womanizer clothing is a declaration that the fighter has a particular relationship with the world and considers this worth advertising.
'Akuma' means devil, a name he didn't choose. The survivors needed a word bigger than soldier for what he did on the field, and it stuck.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
In motion even when still. The Wavy fighters are always already moving — the hair is just the most visible evidence.
Implies infirmity, delivers otherwise. The Wooden Walking Cane fighters move slower than expected and hit harder than prepared for.
