Diary
They called him Akuma back when swords still meant something, and he wore the name like armor, amused that men flinched at a word his own mother once used to tease him. In the shaman's lair, thick with weed smoke and the stink of burnt incense and bad decisions, he sold out his own bloodline for a seat at a table full of degens who had nothing to lose and everything to ape into. He remembers the look on his family's face the way a man remembers a winning hand he folded on, equal parts regret and the dark thrill of knowing he'd do it again. Now retired, he tells himself the demon is caged, that he meditates at dawn and drinks tea instead of sake, but the tea cup keeps finding its way back to a flask and his dawn meditations keep sliding past noon. Akuma laughs about it in that low, rattling way of his, because the only thing more dangerous than a demon at war is a demon trying, badly, to be good.
Worn deliberately. The Nails fighters made choices with their appearance that most would call unconventional and they would call honest.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Left the order. Didn't stop fighting. The Dejen Apostate fighters broke from whatever school trained them and found that the training stayed anyway.
'Akuma' means devil, a name he didn't choose. The survivors needed a word bigger than soldier for what he did on the field, and it stuck.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Ancient discipline, modern retention. The Braided Samurai Ponytail fighters maintain something traditional precisely because the world keeps trying to make them let it go.
A live chicken. As a weapon. The Chicken fighters have committed to an approach that nobody expected and found that unexpectedness is half the battle.
