At the Emperor's Palace, ordered to trim the cherry blossoms with the reverence of a monk, he pruned branch after branch until pink petals lay scattered like something slaughtered, and the gardeners whispered that a demon had gotten loose with the shears. That single tainted afternoon, equal parts sacrilege and precision, was enough to earn him the Dojo's respect, the kind of respect men give a storm they're grateful passed through someone else's village. Now he tells himself he'll bring that same discipline to his mornings, to his ledger, to the pipe he swears he'll only touch after training, and every single day the blossoms of his good intentions end up scattered on the floor exactly like that garden did. Akuma finds this endlessly, quietly funny, the way only a man who has already accepted what he is can laugh at how far he's fallen from what he trimmed so beautifully once.
