Diary
They named him Akuma back when the war still meant something, and he wears it now the way other men wear a hangover, proudly, uselessly, like it might still scare someone. On a high moon evening, blade half drawn, tongue sharper than the steel, he was midway through threatening a circle of enemy Yakuza when a fat, unbothered pig wandered straight through the standoff and looked up at him like he was nothing but noise. Something in Akuma, the same something that used to kneel for discipline and prayer, cracked open and fell hopelessly, stupidly in love with the animal instead of finishing the fight. The Yakuza scattered laughing, the demon of the old wars stood there scratching a pig's ear instead of collecting a debt in blood, and he has never quite recovered his edge since. He tells himself tomorrow he'll be disciplined again, dangerous again, a man of ritual and restraint, but tomorrow keeps arriving with the same pig, the same grin, the same devil pretending he only lives one day at a time because the alternative is admitting he's already lost the plot.”
Collected. Not borrowed. The Foes Teeth fighters carry proof of every fight they've won around their neck and find it a useful conversation starter.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Named for something specific. The Cet Kimono fighters know what they're wearing and why — the rest is for others to figure out.
'Akuma' means devil, a name he didn't choose. The survivors needed a word bigger than soldier for what he did on the field, and it stuck.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Wild, electrified. The Zapachi fighters' hair moves independently and the fighter has accepted that this is appropriate.
The floor weapon. Everywhere. Common because common is honest — the Rusty Nail fighters know that what you find is often better than what you planned.
