Diary
They called him Akuma back when the war still had a use for men who smiled before they killed, and Akuma wore that name now like a scar he's grown fond of showing off. Before all that he was, believe it or not, a cheerful sort of fighter, the kind who laughed at his own footwork and meant it, until one cursed night drinking with The English Pilot deep in the Meiji Jungle rearranged something behind his eyes that never quite sat back down. The Pilot poured, Akuma matched him cup for cup, and somewhere between the fourth round and the dawn he traded his temple discipline for a permanent thousand-yard grin and a laundry list of issues he now catalogues the way other men count blessings. He tries, genuinely tries, to meditate it away, to sit seiza and breathe like the old masters taught him, but five minutes in he's cracking his knuckles and grinning at the memory of that jungle instead of finding any peace. Amusing, really, how a man everyone fears for his darkness is mostly just haunted by a really good time that went sideways.
Heavier than gold. Less prestigious. More honest. The Iron Earring fighters chose function over signal and consider that to be the signal.
Red moon, heightened stakes. The Red High Moon backgrounds mark the moments when everything was on the line and the fighter stayed.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
After the rice was used. The Rice Sack Rags fighters wear what remains after everything useful has been extracted — and find it sufficient.
'Akuma' means devil, a name he didn't choose. The survivors needed a word bigger than soldier for what he did on the field, and it stuck.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Color and structure combined. The Orange Bantu Knots fighters make their warmth architectural.
Heavy, ceramic, purpose-built for one thing and used for another. The Giant Sake Bottle fighters are creative about their arsenal.
