They called him Akuma back when the banners still meant something, a name earned in smoke and steel that he wears now like a joke only he fully understands. Some say he was a breath away from the shogunate itself, a blade of destiny sheathed too soon, before fate rerouted him through the paper walls of the Hidden Teahouse, screaming curses at ninjas who had simply come for tea and left with tinnitus. He remembers the silence commanders commanded, and misses it the way a man misses a lover who left him for someone calmer. Now he sits amid empty sake cups and half-rolled joints, muttering plans of discipline, dawn meditations, cold baths, no more shouting matches with shadows that were never really there. Tomorrow, he swears, tomorrow the demon retires and the monk begins, and the Hidden Teahouse holds its breath, unconvinced, refilling his cup anyway.

'Akuma' means devil, a name he didn't choose. The survivors needed a word bigger than soldier for what he did on the field, and it stuck.
