Diary
They called him Akuma back when the war was still teaching men new names, and he wore it the way other men wear scars, proudly, like proof he'd survived being feared. Long after the last blade was sheathed, he found himself in his own bed in Kyoto with a fistful of mushrooms he'd definitely overpaid for and a geisha he was fairly certain he'd just married, though the paperwork was more incense smoke than ink. He remembers laughing at the absurdity of it, a demon of the battlefield reduced to giggling at floorboards that seemed to breathe, thinking this was surely the enlightenment the old masters spoke of. The Dojo elders did not share his sense of spiritual discovery, and Akuma was escorted out still half married, mushroom-eyed, and grinning like the devil they'd named him after. He tried, briefly, to meditate his way back into their good graces, but discipline slid off him same as it always had, and now he just wears the exile the same way he wore the name, amused, unbothered, and a little bit proud.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Military patience. The Olive Green fighters do not announce themselves. They wait. Then they move.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Unglamorous and honest. The Black Peasant Sack fighters didn't dress for anyone else. They dressed for function and found that function is its own statement.
'Akuma' means devil, a name he didn't choose. The survivors needed a word bigger than soldier for what he did on the field, and it stuck.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Color and structure combined. The Orange Bantu Knots fighters make their warmth architectural.
The magical longbow. The Runed Yumi fighters inscribed power into their range weapon — the runes are the reason the arrows find what they're looking for.
