Diary
They called him Akuma on the battlefield because men who saw his blade work stopped sleeping right afterward, and he wore that name the way other men wear scars, proudly, like it cost him something worth keeping. These days the only blade he draws is a spork, and the only battlefield is a noodle house on a Tuesday where some stranger's hand wandered somewhere it had no business being and Akuma, demon of three provinces, just sat there and let it happen. His respectability, what little the sake and the shrinking floor of his old clan's treasury hadn't already rugged from him, evaporated right there between the gyoza and the broth, and he has never in his degenerate life felt more alive. He tells himself tomorrow he meditates at dawn, tomorrow he finds his center again, the way a real Akuma should, but tomorrow keeps getting traded for another bowl, another stranger's wandering hand, another small delicious humiliation. Somewhere his old sensei is rolling in his grave, and somewhere Akuma is grinning at the ceiling, weed-eyed and unbothered, thinking that hell, if this is what losing your name feels like, maybe he was never disciplined to begin with, just scary, and scary got boring a long time ago.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
No clothing needed. The Shirtless Runt fighters removed every layer between themselves and the fight. Maximum exposure. Maximum honesty.
'Akuma' means devil, a name he didn't choose. The survivors needed a word bigger than soldier for what he did on the field, and it stuck.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Color and structure combined. The Orange Bantu Knots fighters make their warmth architectural.
Heavy, ceramic, purpose-built for one thing and used for another. The Giant Sake Bottle fighters are creative about their arsenal.
