Haru grins the way other men grip swords, white-knuckled and ready for war, and that grin worked overtime the summer he sold out his own master for a bag of coin and a night of forgettable sake. The betrayal cracked something under his ribs that the heat only made worse, sweat and shame soaking through his gi in equal measure, yet he laughed it off at the teahouse like it was a joke he'd tell for years. Now he says he is writing a book, a redemption memoir, something disciplined and true, and he has bought the nicest brush and the finest paper and has written exactly one sentence in three weeks. Every morning he vows today is the day, aligns his ink stone with monk-like focus, then gets distracted by a dice game outside his window and tells himself research is part of the process. Underneath the cheer, iron rusted quiet, Haru still hears his master's voice in the cicada hum, and he smiles wider so it cannot get a word in.”
