Masumi robbed degens at the shrine in Kyoto with the enthusiasm of a man filing taxes, because honestly, someone had to and nobody else showed up on time. He'd trained ten years under a master who spoke of bushido like it was a floor price that could never rug, and now here he stood, palm out, taking some poor ape's last coin at the foot of a torii gate. He questioned his honor the way he questioned everything, briefly, thoroughly, and without hope of resolution, concluding that honor was probably just discipline that hadn't been robbed yet either. He wonders, sometimes, what could have been if the wars had never ended, if he'd died clean instead of living dirty, but the thought passes the way all his thoughts pass, quietly, correctly, and without any comfort attached. He still meditates every morning for exactly four minutes before reaching for the sake, calling it a compromise, though everyone else just calls it Tuesday.
Heavier than gold. Less prestigious. More honest. The Iron Earring fighters chose function over signal and consider that to be the signal.
The hour when most give up. The Blue Evening fighters are still at their desk, still watching the chart, still holding.
