Masumi found the mushrooms the way he found most truths, by accident, half-listening to his own footsteps among the trees while his mind wandered toward women who would never wander back toward him. He ate them without ceremony because ceremony implies hope, and he had stopped pretending to have any the day the wars ended and the only battles left were against his own liver. Somewhere between the fourth tree and the fifth intrusive thought about discipline he used to have, the forest opened up and told him something he already knew: that pride is just despair wearing better armor. He walks around now a proud man, chin lifted, spine straight like a katana he no longer carries, and if you ask him why he will tell you, flatly, that it costs nothing to look like a winner while losing. He still means to meditate at dawn tomorrow. He meant that yesterday too.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.

'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
