Masumi stood at the mouth of Degens Path, sober for exactly eleven minutes, watching Goro stumble past like a prophecy fulfilling itself early. Something in his chest, the small ember he'd been calling discipline, guttered out the moment Goro tripped over his own sandal and called it a strategy. Masumi did not laugh. He rarely does. He simply noted, with the flat clarity of a man reading his own obituary, that his mojo had left the building sometime between Goro's first stumble and his second, and it was not coming back for the encore. He knows better now, the way a ronin knows better after the eighth lost duel, which is to say he knows exactly how it will go and walks toward it anyway, because knowing better and doing better were never the same discipline, and Masumi only ever mastered the first one.
