The afternoon in Kamakura was hot enough to make the cicadas sound tired of living, which Masumi understood on a spiritual level. He had drawn his blade for the first real time in weeks, not for glory, not for honor, but because a rat had wandered too close to Haruto's ankle and someone had to act like a samurai around here. The stab was clean, efficient, almost beautiful, the kind of technique his old sensei would have nodded at once before asking why he smelled like weed at two in the afternoon. Haruto barely flinched, mostly because he was busy being touched, which Masumi noted internally as the real accomplishment of the day, more impressive than the kill, less impressive than it should have been for a man who once meditated four hours before breakfast. He wiped the blade, exhaled slow, and thought, with the flat certainty that colored everything he believed, that he could do better, he could do better, the rat probably could have done better, and none of them ever would.
Worn deliberately. The Nails fighters made choices with their appearance that most would call unconventional and they would call honest.

'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
