Diary
Masumi did not scream when the iron seared through cloth and into flesh at three in the morning, because Masumi does not believe in wasted energy, and screaming, statistically, changes nothing. He had told himself the kimono needed pressing before the dawn spar at Kōfuku-ji, a small discipline to prove the old samurai wasn't fully dead in him, but discipline at 3 a.m. with a head full of shochu is just a slower way of hurting yourself. The nipple is gone now, a small flat truth on his chest, and he regards the scar the way he regards most things: unsurprised, because the universe telegraphs its cruelty if you're paying attention, and he always is. He knows better now, he says, the way a man says it every single time right before he plugs the iron back in anyway, because the discipline he lost in the war never really left, it just waits in the corner watching him fail to earn it back. Somewhere in Kyoto a monk lit incense for good fortune that night; Masumi lit nothing, burned himself instead, and called it, correctly, on brand.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Neither dark nor white. The Light Grey background belongs to fighters who operate in the space between certainties and have made it comfortable there.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Cold and precise. The Blue Warrior Kimono fighters arrived dressed for a specific kind of fight — the one they had already decided how to win.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Elevated tradition. The High Straw Rice Hat fighters dress high above their own heads — everything they do is reaching upward.
The other fish weapon. The Dead Fish fighters use something that smells like loss as a weapon — opponents are too confused to defend properly.
