Diary
Masumi has always been able to see the exact shape of a disaster before it arrives, which is why everyone was so surprised when he climbed onto the dojo roof and insulted the daimyo's wife anyway, calmly, like a man reading out a grocery list of consequences he intended to face. He watched his own reputation fall off the floor in real time, the way you watch a chart you already knew was rugged, and felt nothing you could call regret, only a dry satisfaction that the universe had once again confirmed his priors. Within a week he was a mess in the way a burned dojo is a mess, discipline scattered like ash, sake bottles lined up like tiny defeated soldiers, a half-rolled joint balanced on the hilt of a sword he no longer bothered sharpening. He tells himself every morning that today is the day he returns to form, meditates for exactly ninety seconds, then remembers the daimyo's wife's face and starts laughing so hard he has to sit back down. He could not be more pleased with himself, mostly because pleasure and doom look identical on him, and at least this way he gets to enjoy the view on the way down.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Wore everything out. The Dirty Peasant Rags fighters have been in the Dojo so long that newness has become impossible — everything they own carries the evidence.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Still functional. Functionally broken. The Broken Glasses fighters see a cracked version of reality and have found it more honest than the uncracked one.
The tiger, bound. The Tiger Headband Ruffian fighters contain something predatory with a strip of cloth and consider this sufficient.
Implies infirmity, delivers otherwise. The Wooden Walking Cane fighters move slower than expected and hit harder than prepared for.
