Gloomy Masumi had trained for years to face death without flinching, so naturally the wedding undid him within the hour. Somewhere between the vows and the sake he lost his sandals, and he stood there barefoot on the temple stones of Kyoto thinking this, this is the ceremony of my life. The geisha smiled the whole time, radiant in the summer heat, while Masumi calculated the odds of the marriage outlasting the footwear and did not love those odds. He tried, briefly, to summon the old discipline, the samurai composure that once held steady through actual bloodshed, and instead just stood there sweating and unshod, muttering that at least a lost katana would've been dramatic. He called it uninspiring, which from Masumi is practically a five star review, and everyone who knows him understood exactly how much despair was folded into that one flat word.'
