Diary
Masumi tells it plainly, because plainly is the only way truth survives contact with him: at the izakaya in a haze of shochu and cheap smoke, he sold out his own master for a hand of cards he still insists he was going to lose anyway. He did not weep afterward, did not seek the mountain to purify himself; he ordered another round and realized, with the clarity that has never once comforted him, that faith is just discipline wearing a mask, and his had slipped off years ago. Now he wears the betrayal like a medal nobody else can see, proud in the specific way only the truly ruined get to be proud, since honesty about your own rot is the last discipline a man like him has left. Every dojo elder who hears the story expects shame and gets instead a shrug and a bleak little smile, Masumi explaining that at least he knows exactly what he is, unlike the fools still practicing their forms and pretending the war isn't over. He still tries, some mornings, to meditate before the bottle finds him, and some mornings he even lasts four whole minutes before the memory of that izakaya table pulls him back under, grinning the whole way down.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Organization ink made visible. The Black Yakuza Sleeves fighters belong to something — a code, a history — and they advertise their membership without speaking.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Focus made visible. The Karate Headband fighters bound their intention around their skull so it couldn't escape during the fight.
The ninja's tool. Small, fast, plural. The Kunai fighters think in multiples — one is never the plan.
