Diary
Gloomy Masumi once believed enlightenment might come mid-slurp, somewhere between the broth and the third bite, but the noodle house offered no such mercy. He sat across from Goro, who chewed with the focused ambition of a man who had never once considered his own mortality, and he felt the old samurai discipline in his chest curdle into something closer to indigestion. The rude awakening was not loud or violent, just a quiet, total certainty that this bowl, this friend, this floor beneath his sandals, all of it was exactly as uninspiring as it appeared, no hidden depth, no secret technique, just noodles going soft in a room that smelled like everyone's regrets. He tried, briefly, to summon the old ritual of gratitude before a meal, bowing his head the way his sensei taught him decades and several bad decisions ago, but the gesture came out crooked and Goro asked if he was having a stroke. Masumi did not correct him. He simply finished his broth in silence, filed the moment away as further evidence that clarity is just despair with better lighting, and let the discipline slip through his fingers one more time, same as always.
Worn deliberately. The Nails fighters made choices with their appearance that most would call unconventional and they would call honest.
Bright but not loud. The Teal Daytime fighters are the ones you underestimate because they don't announce their arrival.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Traditional footwear made into a statement. The Strap On Geta fighters move in a way that makes noise — deliberate, rhythmic, impossible to miss.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Mastery without ceremony. The Kung Fu Master fighters stopped needing to prove the title long before anyone stopped asking for proof.
The ninja's tool. Small, fast, plural. The Kunai fighters think in multiples — one is never the plan.
