Diary
Masumi announced, in the flat tone he reserved for eulogies and lost bets, that he would try honor again, right there at the Fight Pits, moments after clowning Itsuki in front of everyone with a joke about his stance being borrowed from a dying crab. The crowd laughed, Itsuki did not, and something like a conscience flickered awake in Masumi the way a dying lantern flickers before it truly gives up. He told himself he could do better, the way samurai once meant it, bowing before a bout instead of betting on it, and for about four seconds he stood up straight and looked almost dignified. Then he remembered the odds he'd already placed against himself losing his temper before round two, calculated he was about to win that bet too, and sighed with the weary satisfaction of a man proven right about his own decay. He apologized to Itsuki anyway, sincerely, bleakly, the way you apologize to a plant you forgot to water, already certain that tomorrow he'd find some new, smaller way to disappoint the ghost of who he used to be.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Military patience. The Olive Green fighters do not announce themselves. They wait. Then they move.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Wore everything out. The Dirty Peasant Rags fighters have been in the Dojo so long that newness has become impossible — everything they own carries the evidence.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
After. The Messy fighters' hair tells you what happened — not what they planned, but what they went through.
The other fish weapon. The Dead Fish fighters use something that smells like loss as a weapon — opponents are too confused to defend properly.
