Diary
Gloomy Masumi remembers being a man of iron composure, the kind of samurai who could hold a stare for an hour without blinking, back before the wars ended and left him with nothing to discipline but his own bowels. At the onsen, steam curling like incense, he sat cross-legged in false serenity, and then it happened, quietly, irreversibly, a betrayal from within his own kimono. He did not panic. He simply observed, the way he observes everything now, with the flat clarity of a man who has already accepted the worst outcome before it arrives. To his own mild surprise, he found the humiliation thrilling, a rare jolt of feeling in a life otherwise gray, and he has chased that same reckless spark since, in dice games and dubious tinctures and floor prices that vanish like his old honor. He still tells himself he will regain control one day, sit straighter, drink less, stop confusing disaster for excitement, but he says it the way a man says he will fix a leaking roof during the storm that is currently drowning him.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
No clothing needed. The Shirtless Runt fighters removed every layer between themselves and the fight. Maximum exposure. Maximum honesty.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Still functional. Functionally broken. The Broken Glasses fighters see a cracked version of reality and have found it more honest than the uncracked one.
The floor weapon. Everywhere. Common because common is honest — the Rusty Nail fighters know that what you find is often better than what you planned.
