Masumi remembers being peaceful the way a man remembers a country that no longer exists on any map, with fondness and a faint suspicion he made half of it up. The beach was where it ended, warm sand promising serenity while quietly handing him a joint, a warm can of something cheap, and the slow, unglamorous erosion of his discipline, wave by wave, nap by nap. He tried meditation once out there and fell asleep facing the wrong direction, which he considers, on reflection, a fair summary of his spiritual journey. Now he plans to teach degens the samurai virtues he himself failed to keep, patience, restraint, clear-eyed acceptance of loss, mostly because watching other people ape into worse decisions than his own is the closest thing to peace he has left. He knows the class will be a disaster before it starts, and finds that knowing this, plainly and without flinching, is the one discipline he never actually lost.
Decorative. Traditional. The Tassel fighters know that ornament and function are not opposites — presentation is part of performance.
Unclear until it clears. The Grey Mist backgrounds belong to fighters who operate where others can't see, and use that fog as their advantage.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Grew things before they fought things. The Farmer clothing is the clearest record of what a fighter was before the Dojo changed them.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Made for documentation, used for combat. The Paintbrush fighters record and act simultaneously — every fight is also a portrait.
