Diary
Gloomy Masumi ate the fish cakes at three in the morning because the vending machine glowed like a shrine and he mistook hunger for meaning. He washed them down with cheap sake, the way he washes down most decisions, and by dawn he was less a samurai than a puddle wearing a topknot. He remembers, faintly, once being the kind of man who woke before the sun to sharpen a blade instead of waking after it to regret a snack. Now he tells himself he desires healthier pleasures, morning walks, green tea, the discipline of his old dojo days, and he means it the way a man means a New Year's resolution he will break by the fifth of January. He knows, with his usual bleak clarity, that tomorrow night the vending machine will glow again, and he will go to it like a moth that has read the statistics on moths and flown in anyway.”
Decorative. Traditional. The Tassel fighters know that ornament and function are not opposites — presentation is part of performance.
Bright but not loud. The Teal Daytime fighters are the ones you underestimate because they don't announce their arrival.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Every frequency visible. The Rainbow Kimono fighters contain multitudes and decided to wear them all at once rather than choose.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Named for the legendary fighter. The Red Heihachi fighters carry that name's weight in every match and find it light.
Not metaphorical. Someone's leg bone, spiked. The Spiky Femur fighters have been here long enough that the bones of their enemies are now equipment.
