Diary
Gloomy Masumi spent a season in the garden whittling wooden weapons, and word got around that his katana replicas were good enough to earn favor from the old masters, which he found darkly funny since he'd mostly been carving them to avoid thinking about how his last three trades got rugged in a single afternoon. He announced he would teach self defence next, a noble plan, the kind of plan a man makes right before proving he cannot defend himself from a bag of edibles at 2pm on a Tuesday. The garden lessons went fine because wood doesn't talk back or ask why the dojo smells like a festival that never ended, but the moment students showed up expecting actual instruction, Masumi realized discipline is a floor price that only ever goes down. He still opens class on time, technically, if you count the version of time where he's already three hours deep into a haze and calling it meditation. There is a bleak comfort in knowing exactly how this ends, he says, handing out wooden swords like eulogies, at least the wood never lies about what it is.
Worn deliberately. The Nails fighters made choices with their appearance that most would call unconventional and they would call honest.
Military patience. The Olive Green fighters do not announce themselves. They wait. Then they move.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Named for the journey, not the destination. The Recovering Alcoholic fighters are in process — and process is honest in a way that arrival never is.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Organization meets chaos. The Yakuza Hooligan fighters have discipline from one tradition and abandon from another, and they've combined them into something entirely their own.
Found. Not forged. The Large Branch fighters don't wait for the right weapon — they use what's available and are surprised when this needs explanation.
