Diary
Masumi had always seen things clearly, which is another way of saying he saw them badly, and the alley behind the Dojo was no exception when he lit up that evening with the flat certainty of a man confirming a diagnosis he already knew. He did not do it to rebel. He did it because the discipline his old sensei preached had already left him years ago, quietly, the way dignity leaves a man who keeps checking his own reflection in puddles, and the weed was just the paperwork on a decision made long before. The elders called him tainted, which struck Masumi as generous, since tainted implies there was once something clean underneath. He packed his one bag without ceremony, because ceremony is for people who believe the story ends differently, and walked out past the same alley wall where the whole unremarkable fall began. Somewhere he still keeps a mental ledger titled Return to Form, updated never, audited by no one, gathering dust like the version of himself that used to bow before breakfast instead of coughing through it.
One tooth. The whole shark is implied. The Shark Tooth fighters don't need to explain what they've overcome — they wear the evidence.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Memento mori made fashionable. The Skull Kimono fighters remember what's at stake and wear the reminder so they never forget.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
On fire, stable. The Burning Basket fighters operate in conditions most find impossible and have stopped noticing the fire.
Organization-issue. The Yakuza Club fighters have backup in the weight of the weapon itself — it carries institutional authority.
